Angels, Rainbows and a No-Hitter
On May 22nd, 2008, the Long Island Angels got ready to face the Long Island Patriots in a showdown for
first place. The Angels got off to an early lead and were cruising along as pitcher Brandon Bonomo was hurling a gem. In the fifth inning, Brandon realized he was throwing a no hitter. As the 5th inning ended, the rain started to drizzle in. It was not enough to stop play, but as Brandon exited the dugout to pitch the 6th inning, suddenly a rainbow appeared from out of the clouds and covered the entire field. Brandon kept his composure retiring the first two Patriots. One out away from a no hitter, the next batter drew a walk on a 3-2 count. The first walk of the game. The no-hitter and the victory were still in tact. The next batters also worked the count to 3-2 before drawing a walk to put runners on first and second with 2 away. With 2 outs, and two runners on base, the count drew to 3-2. He came to his windup and instead of throwing the pitch, he stepped off the mound, spun around and fired the ball to second base. The Short Stop, Joey Marzouk applied the tag to the Patriot runner who dove back to the base… the umpire shouted “You're out!” and the game was over. When asked about the no-hitter, Brandon replied “I couldn't have done it without my teammates. They played great defense and scored 7 runs!"
